Abstract
Introduction: Academic motivation is the primary driving force for students in achieving educational goals and is a key factor in effective learning. Understanding and evaluating this factor is essential for improving the quality of education and enhancing students’ academic performance. The present study simultaneously examined the relationship between demoralization, rumination, and academic motivation among medical sciences students in Isfahan in 2023, with the main aim of clarifying the interrelationships between these variables.
Methods: This descriptive–analytical cross-sectional study was conducted with the participation of 293 undergraduate and professional doctorate students at Isfahan University of Medical Sciences in 2023. Sampling was carried out using quota sampling. Data were collected via an online questionnaire, the link of which was provided to eligible students. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS version 19, employing descriptive statistics, independent t-test, and analysis of variance.
Results: The findings indicated that female students had higher academic motivation than males. There was no significant relationship between academic motivation and rumination (p = 0.559, r = 0.034), nor between academic motivation and demoralization (p = 0.651, r = −0.027). However, rumination had a significant positive correlation with demoralization (p < 0.05, r =0.822).
Conclusion: The results highlight the importance of enhancing academic motivation among students, particularly males, and emphasize the need to identify other influencing factors. It is recommended that universities design and implement educational interventions to boost motivation and prevent demoralization. Ensuring balanced sampling from different faculties and investigating a broader range of variables in future research could provide a more comprehensive understanding of this phenomenon. Such strategies may improve students’ academic performance and satisfaction with their educational experience.
