Abstract

Introduction: Nurses are recognized as one of the most essential and pivotal components of healthcare systems worldwide. Addressing their competencies and educational needs can help resolve many challenges in delivering effective healthcare services. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify the educational needs and required competencies of undergraduate nursing students.
Methods: This descriptive-cross-sectional study was conducted using the Delphi method in 2022-2023 at Saveh Faculty of Medical Sciences. The study population included nursing department professors, students, and nursing graduates working in clinical settings.
Results: The target group was specifically selected in each of the three stages and, as followed up by the researchers, consisted of 3 faculty members, 21 second-year undergraduate students and above, and 12 working nurses. According to the participants in the final two Delphi rounds, familiarity with the principles of report writing and legal and regulatory issues in nursing had the highest average.
Conclusion: According to the results of this study and the findings of various research, there are many gaps in skills and competencies in the educational program of undergraduate nursing students, which will affect the quality of the services they provide. Therefore, it is recommended that the principles of report writing be included in the students’ curriculum in a theoretical manner, followed by practical training through familiarization with examples of nursing report errors. Finally, under the supervision of the internship instructor, they should complete several reports and patient files.
